H. M. CARNES. Several generations of the Carnes family have maintained their residence in Westmoreland county.
William Carnes, of German descent, was a farmer of Ligonier township, and his son, William Carnes, Jr., was born
on the family homestead in that township, in 1834. There he spent the days of his boyhood and youth and after his
marriage he began farming on his own account in his native township, where he has since carried on agricultural
pursuits. He is a stanch Republican in politics, and for several years he served as township supervisor. He is
a member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He married Belle Witt and they had seven children, three of whom are
dead. Those living are: Catherine, wife of Peter Peeler, of Ohio; Frank L., a resident of Ligonier township; H.
M.; and Annie, wife of William Irwin, of Ligonier township.
H. M. Carnes was born in Ligonier, Westmoreland county, November 8, 1866 and, after completing his public school
education, he continued at home until twenty-one years of age, when he started out in life on his own account and
for two years worked on a farm. He then secured a position as fireman on the Pittsburg branch of the Pennsylvania
railroad, making his home in Pittsburg, and in 1899 he was promoted to the position of engineer, in which capacity
he has since served. He removed to Youngwood in 1901. Mr. Carnes was married in April, 1891, to Isabelle Barclay,
a daughter of Alexander and Sarah Septer-Barclay, of Ligonler township, Westmoreland county. Mr. and Mrs. Carnes
have two children, Alexander B. and Mary E. In his political views Mr. Carnes has always been a Republican, and
in February, 1902, was elected on that ticket to the borough council, which position he is now filling with credit
to himself and satisfaction to his constituents. His wife is a mem.ber of the Presbyterian church, while fraternally
he is connected with Youngwood Lodge, No. 667, I. O. O. F.; J. M. Guffey Division, No. B. L. E., and of the latter
is now treasurer.
