ROBERT E. GRIFFITH. Among Scottdale's progressive citizens of the younger generation, Robert E. Griffith occupies a foremost place. Mr. Griffith is the great-grandson of James Griffith, who was born in Ireland, and before leaving his native country married Margaret Thompson, with whom he emigrated to the United States and settled in Allegheny county, Pennsylvania.

Hugh C. Griffith, one of the seven children of James and Margaret (Thompson) Griffith, was born November 5, 1829, in Elizabeth, Westmoreland county. He was a saddler and followed his trade at various places in that part of the country. His church membership was with the Lutheran denomination. He married Isabel, daughter of Abraham and Willianna (Cowan) Lewis. and granddaughter of William Cowan, who was a captain in the Revolutionary army. Their children were: Harry, deceased: Edward C, of whom later James; Thomas; William A, an attorney in Pittsburg; Anna, married Theodore Butterfield; and Mary.

Edward C. Griffith, son of Hugh C. and Isabel (Lewis) Griffith, was born in 1852, in Westmoreland county, and in early life was for some years engaged in teaching. He is now in the real estate business in Greensburg. He married Sarah, daughter of Peter and Margaret (Gongware) Lenhart, and four children were born to them Jennie, graduated from the Greensburg Seminary, is now a stenographer in Pittsburg: Robert E., of whom later: and two who died in infancy.

Robert E. Griffith, son of Edward C. and Sarah (Lenhart) Griffith, was born September 2, 1875, in Westmoreiand county, and received his education in the Greensburg schools. In 1895 he began business in Scottdale under the firm name of Griffith Company, heating and plumbing. He conducted this enterprise for three years, abandoning it in 1898, on the outbreak of the Spanish American war. He then enlisted in the Tenth Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, and for one year served in the Philippines, being mustered out of service in San Francisco in 1899. He has been superintendent of the Scottdale Heating and Roofing Company since January 1, 1905. He is a member of the Reformed church of Scottdale. He married Mary A., daughter of Jesse Felgar.
