JOHN H. HAYS, a resident of Raffsdale, highly esteemed in the community in which he resides, is a native of
Mount Pleasant township, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, born June 23, 1864.
John Hays (grandfather) was born in Donegal, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and resided there throughout his
entire lifetime, being for many, years the proprietor of a well known and largely patronized hotel In religion
he adhered to the tenets of the Lutheran church in which he held membership, and in politics was an active Democrat.
He married Miss Ansfould, and their children were: Mary, married John Peterman; Martha, married Captain William
Logan; Amanda, married John Campbell; Catherine, unmarried; Abraham, was killed during the progress of the Civil
war; John J., of whom later; Jesse, deceased; Clement, deceased; Benton, deceased.
John J. Hays (father) was born in Donegal, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, 1830, and died in the year 1891.
During his active career he gave his entire attention to farming, in which occupation he was highly successful.
He was a member of the Lutheran church, and an active Democrat, holding the offices of constable and supervisor
for a number of years. He married Esther Fligor, daughter of William and Sarah Fligor, and their children were:
William. F., a resident of East Huntingdon township; Sarah, unmarried; John H., of whom later; Jesse C.; Minnie,
died in childhood; Nettie, a graduate of California state normal school, now a teacher in the schools of West moreland
county; Mary, a graduate of Greensburg Seminary, now employed as stenographer and typewriter for the firm of S
Dillinger & Son
John H. Hays, second son in the above named family, was educated in the common schools of Mount Pleasant township,
and in early life worked out among the farmers and on the railroad for a short period of time. After his marriage
he settled in Ruffsdale, where he has since resided, and has served in the capacity of general foreman for the
firm of S. Dillinger & Son, creditably and acceptably performing the duties assigned to him. He is a charter
member of the K. M., Lodge No. 350, of Ruffsdale Grand Fraternity, Lodge No 8, Ruffsdale in which he has passed
all the chairs, and the M. W. A. Mr. Hays married, in 1892, Flora E. Truxel, daughter of Henry and Susan Truxel,
and their children are: Nettie G., born February 22. 1893. Harry C., born September 28, 1895; Paul H., born January
28, 1899; J. Richard, both February 22, I901; Margaret Esther, born June 10, 1903. Mr. and Mrs. Hays are members
of the Reformed Church of Ruffsdale, Pennsylvania.
