MICHAEL J. KELLY. Among the successful and enterprising business men of Scottdale, Westmoreland county, Pennsylvania, and those who have contributed liberally to the upbuilding and advancement of the progressive town thay justly be mentioned Michael J. Kelly, proprietor of the Central Hotel. He is a native of county Mayo, Ireland, born January 6, 1857, the son, of Edward and Margaret (Gillgallon) Kelly, who emigrated with their family to America in 1861, locating in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Edward Kelly was by occupation a miner, and about 1867 removed to Bloomington, Maryland. He was a devoted member of the Roman Catholic church. He married Margaret Gillgallon, and their children were: John. deceased: a daughter, deceased; Mary, wife of Robert F. Shepperd, of New Haven, Fayette county, Pennsylvania; Michael J., mentioned hereafter: Edward, died when about twenty-six years of age: Bridget, wife of D. B. Dublin, hotel proprietor of Homestead, Pennsylvania: Kate, married Patrick Sheehan. a mill worker of Homestead; Margaret. wife of H. L. Dublin, hotel proprietor of Pittsburg. The death of the father of these children occurred in 1868 and he was hurried in Westernport Man land in the Catholic cemetery. His widow is still living, at the advanced age of eighty five years, and makes her home with her children.

Michael J Kelly, son of Edward and Margaret (Gillgallon) Kelh, received his education in the public schools and night schools. After the death of his father and when but a young boy Michael found himself dependent upon his own resources to earn a living, and being willing and energetic, he soon found employment and for some time worked about the mines, mills and docks. He was variously employed along these lines until 1880. since which time he has devoted his attention to the hotel business. In 1891 he took up his residence in Scottdale, Westmoreland county, where he has since resided with the exception of three years, from 1894 to 1897 when he was engaged in the hotel business at Homestead with his brother-in-law, D. B. Dublin. In 1891 Mr. Kelly, in company with Mr. Dublin, bought out the hotel business of M. J. Rorke, the Scottdale House, and were engaged in the conduct of the same until 1894, meeting with considerable success. In August of the last mentioned year they removed to Homestead, Allegheny county, remaining there until 1897, having purchased the hotel called the Rattigan House. In 1897 he returned to Scottdale, and in company with Mr. D. L. Null purchased the Central Hotel. Mr. Null was associated with him in the conduct of the hotel until 1900, when Mr. Kelly succeeded to the entire business, having purchased the interest of his partner. The hotel is centrally located and is conducted along the lines of a first class commercial house. The proprietor is now engaged in making extensive improvements in the house, which, when completed, will have a frontage of sixty feet and a depth of about one hundred feet. It will be four stories high, the main part with a brick frontage. The interior as well as the exterior is being entirely remodelled, and when completed it will be one of the finest hotels in this section of the state. It has marble and tile floors on first floor and marble wainscoting in bar and office, halls and bath. In addition to his other business interests, Mr. Kelly is a stockholder in the Barnes-Maher Plate Glass Manufacturing Company. He is a capable, energetic business man, well qualified for his line of business. Mr. Kelly is a patriotic, public-spirited citizen, interested in all local affairs. He strongly defends the principles of the Democratic party, and holds membership in the B. P. O. E. No. 777. In church relations he affiliates with the Roman Catholic faith, being an attendant of St. John the Baptist Church of Scottdale. Mr. Kelly married, January 7, 1904, Bessie Ward,, of Homestead.
